Benjamin Crane
Owner and Principal Broker, Vigilant Property Management
Growing up as a child with the surname Crane, I was constantly immersed in the imagery and symbolism of these magnificent creatures. Captivated by their presence, I developed a love for cranes, especially the enchanting legends and stories woven around them, some dating back millennia.
As I pondered naming my business, the idea of incorporating “Crane” into the title lingered in my mind. Among the potential options, “Crane Real Estate Services” stood out. However, while working with this concept, I recognized the importance of creating a logo that would include a representation of a crane. Branding myself effectively required a strong visual element.
Inspiration struck when I recalled an old tale from my childhood known as “The Vigilant Crane.” This story, first recounted by Pliny the Elder, a Roman philosopher, naturalist, and general, in the first century AD, captivated my imagination. In this story, cranes designated one of their members to stand guard while the rest slept. The sentinel would hold a stone in its claw, ensuring that if it dozed off, the stone would fall and awaken the crane. This symbol of a crane holding a stone in its claw is well-known in heraldry as “a crane in its vigilance.”
As I delved deeper into this legend, I realized that “Vigilant” was the ideal name for my business. The definition of vigilant – “keeping watch for possible danger or difficulties” – perfectly encapsulated the message I wanted to convey. The combination of the name and the visual representation of a crane allowed me to communicate this message effectively. Moreover, this imagery elegantly connected my surname to the business without explicitly stating it.
Incorporating the image of the crane into all my marketing efforts has been a thrilling endeavor, and I am excited to continue showcasing this symbol in my branding.
